2009 Grand Prize Winner and t-shirt design for 2010!
Trisha Romo, 11th Grade, Frisco High School, Fantasy Division

Soon businesses and schools in Wimberley will be carefully tending cages of caterpillars, watching as the caterpillars form chrysalises and eagerly awaiting the moment that they emerge as beautiful Painted Lady butterflies at the 12th Annual EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens Butterfly Festival!
Opening Ceremonies
The 12th Annual Butterfly Festival begins with Opening Ceremonies at the Veterans Memorial Plaza featuring posting of the colors by active duty military personnel, music by the Hill Country Community Band, a Commemorative Air Force flyover (weather permitting), and a memorial release of butterflies.
Butterfly Releases
The day continues with the live release of 2000 butterflies (released every 30 minutes throughout the day). This year, the butterfly launch pad will be on the new 6 acres of property that the EmilyAnn purchased in 2008 with the assistance of the The Burdine Johnson Foundation, The PSH Foundation, and the Meadows Foundation as well as many contributions from individuals.
Educational Activities and Entertainment
This year's festival will feature a wide variety of educational activities including a rain simulator and guided nature walks by the Hays County Master Naturalists in celebration of Earth Day; a river view tank exhibit by Texas Parks and Wildlife; a Firewise Booth with an exhibit on living harmoniously with nature, and a Japanese Chado or Tea Ceremony. A special presentation on fire safety by Smokey Bear should be a highlight for children. Smokey will be available for photos after the program. The 4-H Club will once again provide a petting zoo. The festival will also have displays of butterfly art; games and craft activities, concessions; the popular Butterfly Train for the little ones, and live entertainment throughout the day.
"From morning until night, you can be entertained on the grounds of the EmilyAnn," says Executive Director Ann Rolling. "You won't want to miss Opening Ceremonies and you'll want to be sure to return for the Dancers Under the Stars Showcase in the evening. With the additional 6 acres of property that we added last year, we can offer so much more. There will be something for everyone."
The day will be filled with live entertainment by a variety of groups including the EmilyAnn Theatre Drama One Class presenting poems by Shel Silverstein, The EmilyAnn Drama Two Class presenting Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a return of the popular program Bugz by Scudder Elementary students under the direction of Bobby Derr; Peace Piece by Theatre Education students from Texas State; Dragonfly International School, Wimberley Texan Childcare, the Clickety Cloggers of Austin, and Rory Hancock presenting a yo-yo act. Eppie the Clown will be strolling the grounds performing his balloon magic. Please visit the EmilyAnn's website at www.emilyann.org for time schedules and a current list of entertainment.
Art Contest
The grounds will be decorated with entries in the Butterfly Festival Art Contest and the winners will be announced at the festival. The 2010 Butterfly Festival Artist of the Year is Trisha Romo from Frisco I.S.D. Her winning entry in last year's butterfly art contest will be featured on this year's t-shirt and postcards. Trisha says, "I was inspired to design my butterfly by combining the pure, organic beauty of real-life butterflies with the mystical, other-worldly characteristics of the butterflies that only exist in our imaginations. Butterflies themselves come in such a myriad of shapes, sizes, and colors, and since new species are being discovered every day in every corner of the world, I was inspired to create my own imaginary butterfly species through my artwork." Trisha will be present at the festival signing t-shirts.
Quilt Raffle
Once again, Monica Brown of Wimberley has created a beautiful butterfly quilt, which will be raffled to benefit the EmilyAnn. Raffle tickets will be available at the Butterfly Festival and the drawing will be held that afternoon.
Free Admission
There is no charge to attend the festival; however, donations are gratefully accepted. Concession and game tickets will be available for sale as will tickets to ride the Butterfly Train. "This is the EmilyAnn's once-a-year fundraiser," says Ann Rolling. "We hope everyone will come out and enjoy the day."
Parking
Parking for this year's festival will again be at Wimberley High School and Danforth Junior High. Visitors may take a free shuttle bus or a hay ride from the parking lots or walk the short distance to the EmilyAnn. Parking at the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens will be limited to handicapped parking only.
Dancers Under the Stars Showcase
At 6:00 p.m. on the evening of the Butterfly Festival, the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens will present a Dancers Under the Stars Showcase celebrating performances of different dance styles from around the world including groups such as Tribal Modern Troupe, Midnight Breeze Belly Dancing Troupe, Gypsy Hips, Clickety Cloggers of Austin, Contemporary Cloggers, and many more. THE DISTRACTIONS will be the guest band for the evening, singing and performing some of your favorite 1950's songs. Tickets for this event are $5.00.
